This small farm near Canaan has
fields as rocky as they come. |

At the heart of the Uplands' rugged,
often rocky character is hard, erosion-
resistant metamorphic rock. The
metamorphic bedrock which under-
lies the Uplands formed during an
ancient collision of the North
American continent with Europe
and Africa. The immense pressures
of the collision hardened and
deformed the rock, folding it into the
wild swirls seen in this roadcut in
Haddam. |
