As traprock weathers, the outside surface takes on a rusty orange color. In this view, the traprock face of West Rock stands in brilliant contrast to the green trees below. This New Haven landmark and its sister cliff, East Rock, caused Dutch explorer Adriaen Block to name the region "Rodeberg", meaning "Red Mountain."
