The Face of Connecticut

suburb, forest, or farm. There is no need to visit Vermont or Yellowstone National Park to see land. It's right here. To pause from hoeing your garden for a minute to picture the 6000 foot thick ice sheet which deposited the soil can be almost as breath-taking as watching Niagara Falls roar over the rock. To stand on a busy street corner in the Central Valley and imagine the Great Crack rupturing a supercontinent can be just as awe-inspiring as watching Old Faithful blow its top one more time. And in the Northwest Highlands, on the rocky and marshy shore, along the Metacomet Ridge, and down the winding Connecticut River, the drama of the scenery needs no explanation to capture the imagination. Land is a cup that runs over with life. It is our true fountain of livelihood. Where is this fountain, that we might see it, drink from it, or stand back and quietly take it in? Right under our feet.
